This River is My Friend

यह दरिया मेरा दोस्त है , मुझसे रोज़ रोज़ बात करता है।

This river is my friend, it talks to me every day.

में जब कभी अंदर से दहलता हूँ तो यह मुझे शांत करता है।

If ever I feel restless from the inside, it calms me down.

मे हर सुबह अपने तेज कदमों से।।

Every morning with my fast-paced steps,

इसके एक साहिल को छूता हुआ,

Touching one shore of the river,

दूसरे से पार निकल जाता हूँ।

I cross over to the other end.

ना कभी इस से कुछ पूछता हु, ना कभी इसको जानने की कोशिश करता हूँ।

I never ask anything of it, nor do I try to know it.

जब कभी थक जाता हूँ। तो इसके किसी किनारे पे बेठ कर

But when I am tired, I sit down at one corner (of the river).

इसको ही अपनी कुछ शिकायतें सुना देता हूँ।

and narrate to it my complaints.

यह मेरा दिल हल्का कर देता है।

It lightens my heavy heart.

आज यह दरिया बैचेन लगता है ।।

Today this river looks restless.

कोई ज्वार है ज़ो उछाले मार रहा है,

There is a high tide that’s causing it to bounce.

कोई लावा है इसकी गोदी में,

There appears to be (volcanic) lava in its lap.

जिसे ग़ुस्से में निकाल रहा है।

Appears that the river is spouting it ( the lava) in anger.

में बैठा हूँ इसके किनारे, इस आस में की शायद यह आज मुझसे बात करे।

Today I sit beside the river in the hope that it talks to me.

आज यह मुझे समझा पाये अपने दिल का हाल।

Perhaps today it will tell me what’s in its heart.

आज में इसकी हर बात सुनूँ ओर कहु

Today I will listen to everything it has to say to me, and say.

मेरे दोस्त इस दुनिया में तू ओर में एक ही है।

“My friend you and I are alike in this world.”

फ़र्क़ इतना है की में समझा पाता हूँ।

The only difference is that I can explain myself.

ओर तूँ सिर्फ़ खुद ही समझ लेता है।

And you understand everything by yourself.

यह दरिया आज मुझसे बात करता है।

Today this river talks to me!
